Make Valentine’s Day about More than Just Chocolates

by Sunrise Cleaning on January 24, 2013

Valentine’s Day can be so much more than just hearts, flowers and chocolates.  This year you can make it about loving others, your environment and the world in which we live.  Chocolates and flowers are nice, but this Valentine’s Day why not consider an eco-friendly Valentine’s Day and give a gift that can impact your loved ones and make a difference in your community and the environment?

Flowers

Think about visiting your local farmer’s market and buying organic flowers from one of your local farmers. Stop for a moment and chat a bit with the grower. Ask them about their farm and the flowers they grow—ask them to share their story. Then when you give the beautiful blossoms to your loved one, share a little bit of the grower’s story.  They’ll appreciate the bouquet and your commitment to support the community and the environment even more.

Chocolates

Give the gift of Fair Trade Chocolates.  Fair Trade certification ensures that farmers receive a fair price, allows farmers to invest in techniques that bring out the flavors of the region, and strictly prohibits slave and child labor. Fair Trade chocolates can be found locally at places like New Leaf or EcoGoods and of course online in those lovely heart shaped boxes we’re all used to seeing.  You can even take things a step further on behalf of your loved ones, by asking large chocolate manufacturers to go Fair Trade.  Include a little card with the chocolates, letting the recipient know that you sent a request in their honor to a large chocolate manufacturer asking them to go Fair Trade—that’s the sweetest gift of all!

House Cleaning—Yes Eco-Friendly House Cleaning!

There’s one more gift I’d like to recommend—cleaning supplies. I know—for Valentine’s Day?  Well, frankly, yes. You’ve heard me say it before, it’s so important to remember that the harsh chemicals used to clean your home release toxic vapors into the air that can damage your lungs, and age the skin. Sunrise Cleaning Service is an environmentally-friendly cleaning service that uses only non-toxic products to clean homes and businesses.  You could consider giving the gift of our cleaning service or visit our Green Cleaning Products page and think about giving a basket of non-toxic cleaning supplies.

Hearts to Remember

Remember when you were in elementary school and you got to go around and give little Valentines cards to all of your friends? These days there’s big business in selling pre-made character splashed valentines. This year I’d like to encourage you to do it the old fashioned way. Get out your scissors and glue, the markers and some construction paper.  Pick up a package of doilies (yes, the ones you can find at the dollar store or craft store), find some old buttons or broken jewelry pieces and make your own!  Be a kid for an hour or two and see what you come up with. I promise you these Valentines will sit proudly on your loved one’s desk for months—because you created it yourself, with loving thoughts and intention. If you make your own Valentine snap a picture and share it with us on Facebook! I can’t wait to see your creativity.

No matter what you do, remember to spend time with your loved ones, and consider the impact you can make in the world with a few simple changes.
