What’s in your cupboard?
I was in the grocery store the other day passing through the household cleaning aisle marveling at the abundance of cleaning products available. The problem with most of them is they come with a warning label proclaiming Warning! Caution! or Danger! These are products that most people use weekly or even daily in their homes. I am an advocate for healthy living and don’t use toxic cleaning products, because I know how dangerous they can be. So for those of you who don’t know the actual EPA’s (Environmental Protection Agency) definition of the words I thought I’d share those with you.
According to the EPA the words warning, caution and danger are Signal Words, words required by law that must be on a label to indicate how toxic or hazardous a product can be. Here are the EPA’s definitions:
- Caution: Harmful if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through the skin.
- Warning: May be fatal if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through the skin. Also indicates products that can easily catch on fire.
- Danger: Fatal if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through the skin. Also used on products that could explode if they get hot.
What are some of the products that contain these Signal Words?
- Drain cleaners
- Oven cleaners
- Laundry detergents
- Glass cleaners
- Floor and furniture polish
